Proposition 65 is a California law that requires warnings about significant exposures to naturally chemicals that cause cancer, birth defects or other reproductive harm, such as:

  • Arsenic
  • Cadmium
  • Lead
  • Mercury
Crops such as rice, and some edible seaweed, may contain traces of substances like arsenic. Shellfish such as shrimp, oysters and scallops may contain traces of substances like cadmium and lead from their seawater environments. While these substances can be harmful at high levels, the amounts present are typically minimal. Additionally, our bodies absorb only a small percentage.

Mercury accumulates in certain seafood, and species such as swordfish and tuna are known to have heightened levels. The FDA advises children and anyone who may be pregnant to limit their consumption.

Your safety and well-being are our top priorities, and we aim to empower you to make informed choices about the seafood you enjoy. For further details on Proposition 65 and its relevance to seafood, please visit www.P65Warnings.ca.gov/food.
