Understanding Prop 65
Proposition 65 is a California law that requires warnings about significant exposures to naturally occurring chemicals that cause cancer, birth defects or other reproductive harm, such as:
- Arsenic (inorganic)
- Cadmium
- Mercury
Shellfish may contain traces of arsenic (inorganic) and/or cadmium from their seawater environments. While these substances can be harmful at high levels, amounts present in seafood are typically minimal. Additionally, our bodies absorb only a small percentage.
Mercury can accumulate in certain types of fish (in the form of methylmercury), such as: swordfish, tuna, king mackerel, shark, and tilefish. The FDA advises children and anyone who may be pregnant to limit consumption.
Your safety and well-being are our top priorities, and we aim to empower you to make informed choices about the seafood you enjoy. For further details on Proposition 65 and its relevance to seafood, please visit www.P65Warnings.ca.gov/food.
